Program Description

This option prepares students for transfer to four-year institutions to pursue a Middle School (K-6 with 5-8 subject-specific) or Secondary Education (K-12 subject-specific) teaching certifications. In addition, many courses prove relevant to the needs of parents and professionals from other fields. Students in this option take courses in education theory and practice, and field observations coupled with the general studies required for successful transfer.

Students are introduced to: the foundations of education, organization and structure of school systems, teaching the exceptional child, inclusion education, English Language literacies, Math literacies, emergent and concentration of content expertise, effective teaching techniques, Globally competent teaching and learning, and technology integration in teaching and learning. Students explore professional opportunities in business and industry. The courses offered in this option need to be taken in consultation with a College counselor.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

● Recognize, analyze, and evaluate the roles and characteristics of the successful classroom teacher including:
● skill in classroom management
● culture and global competencies
● sensitivity to diversity and students with disability needs in inclusive and general education
● use of appropriate teaching and learning strategies in academic-based settings
● promotion of integrated literacy [language development and English literacies, Mathematics literacies]
● mastery of subject matter
● knowledge of child growth and development as applied to a variety of theoretical and philosophical perspectives (birth through adolescence)
● appreciation of ongoing professional development
● Demonstrate an understanding of the essential components of teaching and learning processes as the are articulated in diverse early childhood educational settings
● Think critically to analyze and evaluate cultural, societal, and historical influences that affect early childhood education today.

Notes:

* EDUC199 - Students who have completed EDUC105 Introduction to Education, with a grade of B better, are required to complete 60 hours of observation in an approved academic setting to ensure transferability of EDUC105 to a 4-year institution.

EDUC199 is required for licensing and acceptance into university Education programs. The Education Department at Brookdale highly recommends that the field experience be taken while at Brookdale 1 students wishing to transfer into Teacher Education programs at the university level and for Teacher licensing requirements.

It is strongly recommended that no more than six Education credits be taken in the first two years for transfer.
