Literacy Development and Instruction

Course Description

This course is designed to give students a foundation in the theory and practices of literacy development as they pertain to the processes by which children learn to read and write. Students will be able to recognize the relationships between phonemic awareness, phonics, word recognition, vocabulary and fluency, as well as the complex skills required to develop comprehension in all content areas. Students will also explore the interrelatedness in the development of reading and writing skills and the impact of diverse learners and multicultural issues on the curriculum. Upon completion of the course, students will have developed a foundation in the scientifically research based instructional methods and activities that drive current pedagogical practices. (Prerequisite: EDUC-105 or EDEC-105; Prerequisites or Corequisites: READ-091/092 and READ-095 or satisfactory completion of the College's foundational studies requirement in reading, and ENGL-095 or satisfactory completion of the College's foundational studies requirement in writing)
