Program Description

This option prepares students for transfer to four-year institutions to pursue an Elementary, Kindergarten- Grade 6 (K-6) teaching certification. In addition, many courses prove relevant to the needs of parents and professionals from other fields. Students in this option take courses in education theory and practice and field observations coupled with the general studies required for successful transfer.

Students are introduced to: foundations of education, organization and structure of schools systems, teaching the exceptional child, inclusion education, literacies: emergent and content areas, effective teaching techniques, and technology integration in teaching and learning. Students explore professional opportunities in business and industry. The courses offered in this option need to be taken in consultation with a College counselor.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

Demonstrate an understanding of the essential components of teaching and learning processes in academic settings as they are articulated by current trends and practices in diverse educational settings
○ Recognize, analyze, and evaluate the roles and characteristics of the successful classroom teacher including:
● Skill in classroom management
● Cultural and global teacher competencies
● Sensitivity to diversity and special needs of students: inclusive and general education
● Use of appropriate learning strategies
● Promotion of English literacies and Mathematics Literacies across the curriculum
● Mastery of subject matter
● Knowledge of child growth and development (birth through adolescence]
● Appreciation of the importance of ongoing professional development
○ Think critically to analyze and evaluate societal, cultural, and historical influences that affect education

Notes:

*EDUC199 - Students who have completed EDUC105 Introduction to Education, with a grade of B or better, are required to complete 60 hours of observation in an approved academic setting to ensure transferability of EDUC105 to a 4-year institution.

EDUC199 is required for licensing and acceptance into university Education programs. The Education Department at Brookdale highly recommends that the field experience be taken while at Brookdale for students wishing to transfer into Teacher Education programs at the university level and for Teacher licensing requirements.
