History of Jazz

Course Description

The "History of Jazz" will examine the origins of jazz music and developments from their origins to current trends, with a strong emphasis on historical and sociological factors. Jazz is unique to the American experience in that it combines the musical and cultural traditions of three distinct ethnic groups: the Western European tradition, African and African-Caribbean rhythms and instruments, and late 19th Century American musical styles. All were part of the development and reception of what is considered contemporary Jazz. The course does not require any previous knowledge of music. Attendance at one live jazz concert and a review of the performance is mandatory.
