Middle Eastern History

Course Description

Increasingly, events in the Middle East have commanded more attention throughout the world. The student will understand the historical evolution of the volatile Middle East from ancient times to the crisis-ridden present. Special emphasis will be placed on such themes as preIslamic civilization, the rise and expansion of Islam, the conflict between modernity and tradition, the growth of Arab nationalism, the persistence of Arab-Israeli crisis and Arab rivalries, Great Power conflicts in the region and the worldwide impact of oil. The effects of the end of the Cold War will also be considered. NOTE: This course is offered only in the Spring term.
