History of Modern Asia
Course Description
The course is an introduction to Asian civilizations from the 18th century to the present. Though the focus will be on China, Japan, and Korea, the cultures of India and Southeast Asia may also be included. In the modern period a central feature of world civilization has been the interaction between Asia and the rest of the world. The course will emphasize those interactions, highlighting the era of imperialism, conflicts such as those in Korea and Vietnam, revolution and independence throughout Asia and political developments after World War II, and corresponding social and cultural change. NOTE: This course is offered only in the Fall term.
