Humanities Program, Communication Disorders Option, A.A.

The Communication Disorders Option prepares students to transfer to a four year Baccalaureate degree program in Communication Disorders and Audiology or Communication Science Disorders.  This pre-professional program provides a foundation in basic human communication studies and introduces students to disorders of speech and language.  Through carefully selected general education and career studies courses, the student fulfills the requirements for the Associate in Arts degree and prepares to transfer successfully.  Courses include Introduction to Communication Disorders, The Nature and Development of Language, and American Sign Language.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  • Identify the anatomical features and processes of the human voice
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the human communication process
  • Recognize the symptoms, etiology, and treatment for common Speech-Language disorders in children and adults
  • Demonstrate basic fluency in American Sign Language
  • Apply diagnostic criteria to identify common communication disorders in children and adults
  • Effectively engage in verbal and nonverbal strategies and behaviors to meet interpersonal goals
