Teacher Assistant A.A.S.

This program is designed for students who wish to enter the field of education in a support role of Teacher Assistant.  Coursework completes classroom management training and program support concepts for employment opportunities in the New Jersey public or private school systems.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  • Present effective lesson plans for achievement of specific, measurable goals
  • Develop necessary skills to assist in student learning and perform substitute teaching responsibilities
  • Apply the established criteria for learning in a classroom environment that focuses on classroom procedures and student behavior
  • Utilize instructional and learning strategies that meet the needs of diversified learners with a focus on cultural, learning and ability differences
  • Examine the integration of the literacy skills as part of the curriculum and school success
  • Demonstrate effective team, interpersonal, and professional skills                              


General Education - 20-22 credits:

As described in General Education .

The following General Education courses are required:


(1) Students interested in early childhood should select EDEC courses.

(2) Field experience is recommended.  Students who have completed EDEC 105 or EDUC 105 with a grade of “B” or better are required to complete 60 hours of observation in an approved academic setting to ensure transferability of EDEC 105 or EDUC 105 to a four-year institution.

Electives - 5-7 credits

It is recommended that students select courses that support their career goal and are transferable (consult your counselor).
