Mathematics Option, Mathematics/Science, A.S.

Students wishing, upon acquisition of a Bachelor’s degree, to enter such positions as mathematician, statistician, stock or financial analyst, economist, or researcher should choose this transfer option which combines mathematics with liberal studies.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  • Define and explain basic concepts and theories of differential and integral calculus
  • Identify strategies for solving application problems using derivatives and integrals, and correctly solve these problems
  • Apply the appropriate mathematical skills to find derivatives and integrals
  • Communicate about mathematics problems, explain methods to solve the problems, and interpret results in the context of the problems
  • Use mathematical software to apply concepts and solve problems


General Education - 30-32 credits

As described in the General Education  section of the catalog and identified below:


*Students should select PHYS 121 to complete the Physics sequence which is highly recommended for students choosing this program.  Subject to counselor approval, students may substitute the BIOL 101/102 sequence or CHEM 101/102 sequence.

Career Studies - 20 or 22 credits as follows:

All career studies courses must be passed with a grade of “C” or higher.

Career Studies - 3 or 4 credits from among the following:

All career studies courses must be passed with a grade of “C” or higher.

Electives - 2 to 7 credits:

One of the following courses or a course from Career Studies above is recommended, but not required, to fulfill the elective requirement.

Total credits required for degree: 60


    *The above Physics sequence is highly recommended. However, subject to counselor approval, students may substitute the BIOL 101/102 sequence or the CHEM 101/102 sequence.

  **MATH 151, MATH 152 and/or MATH 153 may be required if prerequisites for MATH 171 are not satisfied.

  ***It is strongly advised that students taking MATH 274 have had Physics.

 ****Students selecting COMP 132 or COMP 171 as an elective are required to take COMP 126 as a corequisite.

Suggested Sequence - Mathematics/Science Program A.S. Degree Mathematics Option

The following sequence is an example of how this degree can be completed in two years. This sequence is based on satisfaction of all Foundational Studies requirements and *prerequisites and presumes a Fall Term start date. An individual’s program may vary depending on transfer institution, career objectives, or individual needs. See a counselor for other options and to monitor your progress.

Semester 2 - Spring Term

Total credits: 14

Summer Term

  • Career Studies Credits: 3-4

Semester 3 - Fall Term

Total credits: 16-18

Semester 4 - Spring Term

Total credits: 8-13

Sequence Notes:

(1) A minimum of 9 credits are required from the Mathematics , Science  or Technological Competency  categories.

(2) One course is recommended from the Cultural and Global Awareness  knowledge area.
