History of Furniture & Interiors

Course Description

This course is a chronological survey of the development of interior design and its primazy component - furniture - in the Western World from pre-history to the present, within the cultural context that shaped it. Special attention is given to the relationship between architecture, interior architecture, and furnishings; between the fine and decorative arts; and to the Elements and Principles used to create and describe design. Through a mix of focused, weekly exercises ( quiz or homework), tests, and image-related projects, students develop visual and intellectual comprehension of"the story" of the evolution of style in interior design. (Prerequisite(s): ENGL-095 or satisfactory completion of the College's foundational studies requirement in writing and READ-095 or READ-092 or satisfactory completion of the College's foundational studies requirement in reading)
