Introduction to Criminal Justice System
Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive overview of the American criminal justice system, examining its key components: law enforcement, the courts, and corrections. Students will explore the historical evolution of the system, with particular emphasis on the constitutional foundations established by the Bill of Rights. The course analyzes the roles and interrelationships of local, state, and federal agencies, as well as contemporary issues such as police powers, transparency, plea bargaining, and capital punishment. Through case studies and discussion, students will critically examine ethical responsibilities and professional conduct across criminal justice careers. The course also introduces students to the diverse career opportunities in the field and the qualifications, skills, and ethical standards necessary for success. This course is a prerequisite for all 200-level courses in the Criminal Justice program.
