Nursing Program A.A.S. (Effective Spring 2017)

This program prepares the student for entry-level nursing positions in hospitals or comparable facilities.  Clinical learning experiences are required for all courses.  Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensing Exam for Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN).  Successful completion of this examination results in licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN).

Specific admission criteria for the program are outlined in the Admission and Registration  section of this catalog.  Separate policies exist for the Nursing Program, including grading.   These policies can be found in the Nursing Student Handbook.                                    

Graduates of this program will be able to:


  • Use clinical reasoning to provide holistic patient-centered care to individuals, families and groups.
  • Assume accountability for own behavior and nursing practice based upon legal and ethical principles, regulatory guidelines, and professional standards.
  • Manage patient care through effective communication and interdisciplinary collaboration within systems-based practice.
  • Use information and technology to communicate, manage knowledge, mitigate error, and support decision making.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, and colleagues, fostering mutual respect and share decision making, to enhance patient satisfaction and health outcomes.
  • Function effectively within nursing and interdisciplinary teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, shared decision making, and collaboration.
  • Minimize risk of harm to patients and providers through both system effectiveness and individual performance.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives to improve the quality and safety of patient care.
  • Utilize the best current evidence coupled with clinical expertise and consideration of patients’ preferences, experience and values to make practice decisions.

The following sequence is an example of how this program can be completed.  This sequence is based on satisfaction of all Foundational Studies requirements and prerequisites and presumes a Fall Term start date.  An individual’s program may vary depending on transfer institution, career objectives, or individual needs.  See a counselor for other options, or to monitor your progress. Note:


Faculty recommend that ENGL 122 be taken in the summer term.  For a full-time credit load in semester 5, students may take courses required for the BSN degree.
