Mathematics/Science Program, Environmental and Earth Sciences Option, A.S.

This option is designed for students who are transferring to a four-year college majoring in environmental sciences, ecology, natural resource studies, marine sciences or geology. Bachelor’s degree graduates may become researchers, environmental scientists, marine biologists or natural resource managers. To maximize transfer credits, students must be guided by the transfer institution’s requirements and work closely with their counselor in order to select courses wisely.

Graduates of this program will be able to:


  • Utilize biological, earth, and physical science to examine environmental issues on a local, regional, and global scale
  • Investigate the role that humans play in influencing the natural world
  • Analyze the social and economic aspects of current environmental issues
  • Employ the scientific method of inquiry to develop critical thinking skills and qualitative and quantitative analytical proficiency

Requirements


Notes:


(1) Some four-year institutions may require Calculus I (MATH 171) and Calculus II (MATH 172).  Students should check the requirements of their transfer institution and work with a counselor.

(2) One course is recommended from the Cultural and Global Awareness knowledge area.

(3) BIOL 208 requires a prerequisite of MATH 131.

The following sequence is an example of how this degree can be completed in two years. This sequence is based on satisfaction of all Basic Skills requirements and prerequisites and presumes a Fall Term start date. An individual’s program may vary depending on transfer institution, career objectives, or individual needs. See your counselor for other options and to monitor your progress.

(4) Students selecting BIOL 208 are required to take MATH 131 as a career studies elective. Students selecting BIOL 207 are required to take an additional career studies course in lieu of MATH 131.
