Humanities Program, Speech Communication Option, A.A.

This Option is for students who wish to transfer to a four-year college with a major in Speech Communication or Communication. Career Options open to four-year Speech Communication majors include teaching, advertising, sales, corporate training, public relations and broadcast journalism. Students taking this option are urged to participate in Brookdale’s competitive speech team. The combination of theoretical and applied oral communication courses within liberal arts studies allow students to transfer to four-year colleges and universities as Speech, Speech Communication or Communication majors.

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  • Demonstrate rhetorical competence by effectively delivering oral messages in a variety of contexts
  • Utilize critical thinking to create and evaluate oral messages
  • Demonstrate information literacy by collecting, analyzing and evaluating information to create effective oral messages
  • Utilize appropriate technology to communicate with others, create and use visual aids, and/or create mediated messages via technology
  • Utilize personal development skills by meeting course deadlines, meeting attendance requirements and managing communication apprehension
  • Utilize effective oral communication skills with diverse audiences
  • Practice oral communication skills to work effectively within teams to complete tasks; demonstrate effective conflict resolution skills in both small group and interpersonal settings

Suggested Sequence - Humanities Program A.A. Degree Speech Communication Option

The following sequence is an example of how this degree can be completed in two years. This sequence is based on satisfaction of all Basic Skills requirements and prerequisites and presumes a Fall Term start date. An individual’s program may vary depending on transfer institution, career objectives, or individual needs. See your counselor for other options and to monitor your progress.

Semester 1 - Fall Term

Total credits: 15-17

Semester 3 - Fall Term

Total credits: 15

Semester 4 - Spring Term

Total credits: 12-16

Sequence Notes:

(1) A minimum of 12 credits are required from the Mathematics , Sciences  or Technological Competency  knowledge areas.

(2) One course is required from the Cultural & Global Awareness  knowledge area. Students may meet the requirement while simultaneously fulfilling the General Education  requirement for another knowledge area.
